Fraternalmente,
Vida Autonoma Cooperacion y Desarrollo

To the communities of "Mehuin" in the South of Chile.
Vidau would like to express it's solidarity for the defence of its
marine resources that have seeded the fishing communities of Mehuin
and give their support in the campaign in defence of the Chilean
environment initiated by the NGO "Oceana" in this country, to be given
out to all our NGO networks and organisations in defence of the
environment and of Human Rights in Europe and the world. It is with
the consciencious consumer that we will walk towards sustainable
development and for that we should assure ourselves that those who
ride roughshod over the local communities and destroy their natural
resources and ecosystems. May they be reported internationally.
The community organisations of Mehuin make their call to the citizens
conscience of the world to defend their ecosystems and marine
resources, where they may be exposed in danger of the intervention of
the Cellulose transnational "CELCO", property of Angeline and Cia, who
hope to build a submarine duct to evacuate their industrial residual
liquids, that are highly toxic to aquatic life because it comes from a
highly contaminating technology (Chlorine dioxides, Sulphur dioxides,
Nitrogen Oxides), high concentrations of iron and other heavy metals.
We show our profound repudiation that the whole international
community shows, against the repression that the fisherman of Mehuin
are suffering directly from their own army, which has fired at the
fishermen, as publicised by their own local organisations and
environmental press of the country.
The aforementioned organisations of traditional fishermen indicate
that their armed forces instead of defending the heritage of the
country, defend the interests of the cellulose trans-national and
attack their own citizens and local communities because these defend
their future food supply on protecting their marine ecosystems. The
trans-national hopes to impose by force, aide by the local
governments, a duct that will contaminate the waters of the coastal
sector and will directly affect the life of the zone and the jobs of
the families of Mehuin and its outskirts.
Without doubt a work of such extent will not only contaminate the
marine waters of the are, but also the Pacific Ocean that will be
spread by the Humbold current that circulates through the south
american coast as far as Ecuador.
This very same Cellulose trans-national is accused of having poisoned
The Nature Sanctuary "Carlos Andwanter" where 6,000 swans were living.
Today only 300 remain because their food
disappeared because of the contamination of the water of the river
Cruces, in Valdivia, Chile. According to studies by the University
"Austral" of Chile, this contamination comes from the Cellulose Plant
"Arauco", property of the trans-national CELCO, located up river.
This plant continues functioning and pouring its industrial wastes
into the river.
For such we call to all the European Community, international and
local from the south of Latin America to stop this outrage, choosing
that they comply with the international legislations in human rights,
and may the scientific recommendations be adopted to detain the
environmental deterioration and promises of the UN Agenda to eradicate
poverty from the local communities by 2015 and may they not impose the
interests of the few privileged that today have economic power.
